Maria Infusino - Teaching
Summer Semester 2019
Master Fachseminar on Real Algebraic Geometry
with
Prof. Dr. Salma Kuhlmann
Mondays: 11.45 – 13.15, Room D404
Description
The aim of this cycle of seminars is to develop in more details some topics
that were introduced in the course “Real Algebraic Geometry I”
from the WS 2018-19 and that could be a starting point for a master thesis in the research
stream investigated in the “Schwerpunkt Reelle Geometrie und Algebra”.
The talks could focus for instance on cylindrical decomposition and topological dimension of
semi-algebraic sets, sum-of squares representations of positive polynomials,
preserving maps for moment sequences, continuous logic, etc. We are also open to
related thematic proposals coming from the participants.
Each talk will provide a review of the results already
known in literature about one topic and point out some related open questions.
Target group
The seminar is primarily aimed at master students, but is also suitable for students of Lehramt.
Preliminary meeting
A preliminary discussion (Vorbesprechung) for the assignment of the topics (Themenvergabe) will take place on
Monday April 15th, 11.45-13.15, D404.
.
For further information, download the
list of possible topics.
Personal Tutorial
A personal tutorial is offered to each of you on Thursdays (13:30-14:30, F408) to assist you in the preparation of your talk, abstract and handout.
In case you need more assistance, further personal tutorials can be arranged by appointment.

July 1st: Hilbert's 17th problem for ordered fields (Moritz Link). Abstract Handout
July 15th: Preservation of moments (Hannes Kühnert). Cancelled!
November 11th: Lower bounds for the minimum of a polynomial using geometric programming (Moritz Schick). Abstract
Weekly deadlines
Monday before your seminar: submission of the final title and abstract by noon
Monday of your seminar: handout of your seminar report at the beginning of your talk (about 5-10 pages)
IMPORTANT DEADLINE: One week after the day of your talk, you should submit the final version of your report
